Addiction Treatment
Addiction treatment is no longer an uncommon occurrence. People
of all social classes and ages in the United States and all
over the world are finding themselves addicted to all sorts of
substances, landing many of them in some type of addiction
treatment. The ultimate goal for any addiction treatment is to
teach the individual how to maintain abstinence and sobriety
from the substance that was controlling their life.
The success of an addiction treatment will generally rely on
whether or not the addicted individual remains in the addiction
treatment long enough to experience the full benefits of all
aspects of the addiction treatment at hand. Determining the
best method to keep the individual in an addiction treatment
program is a critical aspect of the treatment intake and
overall process. Whether or not an individual remains in an
addiction treatment depends on numerous factors linked to not
only the individual, but the addiction treatment program as
well. Individual factors that are important to the commitment
and maintenance of the addiction treatment program include
personal motivation to alter the current drug abuse behaviors,
the extent of support the individual receives from family and
friends, and if there is any requirements from the criminal
justice system, child protection services, employers, or the
family to attend and complete an addiction treatment program.
When it comes to the addiction treatment program itself,
counselors who are successful in aiding the individual through
the addiction treatment create a positive, beneficial
relationship with the individual in need. The counselor has a
responsibility to assist the individual in setting up an
addiction treatment plan that they can follow enabling the
individual to know what to expect in regards to the learning
and behavior modification process during the addiction
treatment. It’s also important that the addiction treatment
offer medical, psychiatric, and social services if the need
should arise.
Since there are some occurrences of particular individual
problems that may arise throughout the addiction treatment,
(such as mental illness, withdrawal complications due to severe
usage of cocaine or crack, and criminal penalty due to drug
involvement) there is an increased chance of a patient not
remaining in the addiction treatment due to these problematic
occurrences. In some of these situations, the addiction
treatment may also require additional intensive treatments in
order to keep these particular patients who in attendance of
their addiction treatment. The addiction treatment program
should also offer an extended care program or after care plan
to ensure a higher probability of success after the individual
completes the initial addiction treatment.
When an addiction treatment program pays particular attention
to the individual’s specific needs due to the extent and
severity of their addiction, the probability of success and
continued abstinence raises dramatically. It’s important to
remember that when anyone chooses to enter into an addiction
treatment program, or is required to do so because of outside
circumstances that the choice of addiction treatment is taken
seriously. Every person has different needs and there is a wide
spectrum of addiction types and severities, and not all
addiction treatments are going to satisfy every person’s
individual needs. Choosing which one is best for your situation
is going to make the difference of continued success after the
completion of addiction treatment, or failure to maintain
abstinence once the addiction treatment program is completed.
Significant changes in any person’s life, not just those who
have addiction problems, can be both overwhelming and
beneficial. However, this does not necessarily guaranty that
any individual will be cured from addiction treatment, and have
no further thoughts of the past negative behavior associated
with drugs, drug acquaintances and drug related activities.
These types of thoughts are very normal, and a significant part
of overcoming the negative behaviors and habits associated with
drug abuses that are addressed through addiction treatments.
Any habit, whether it is positive or negative, is not easy for
anyone to break, and thoughts and behaviors associated with
these habits are naturally going to surface, even while
participating in the best addiction treatment programs
available. The most important aspect for anyone trying to break
a detrimental behavior or habit, such as a drug addiction, is a
positive change in environment to eliminate many of the
triggers associated with that behavior. Starting with an
environmental change is the first thing that should be looked
at when beginning an addiction treatment, in order to assure
success the best way you can.
